Meet Flor, another cherished member of the Centro Hispano family and a student in our newly-launched HiSET prep program. From ESL classes to women’s wellness workshops, Flor has participated in a multitude of programs at Centro for years. Beyond the impressive personal growth that she has achieved through her involvement, we are repeatedly touched by her generosity and desire to give back not only to Centro but to the local Latino community at large. Simply put, she is a beacon of warmth and gratitude for all.

Flor has called Knoxville home for 14 of the 20 years that she has lived in the U.S. She serves as a stabilizing presence and guide for many in the community, and is committed to helping others navigate life in their new home. She first discovered Centro when she needed assistance escaping a domestic situation at home, and she has remained involved with the organization to help others ever since.

Despite the success she has experienced on her continued quest for self-empowerment, Flor couldn’t help but feel a lack of confidence when it came to her education—she didn't get the chance to complete high school before leaving her native Mexico. Over the following two decades, her lack of a high school diploma inhibited her personally and professionally, and took a toll on her self esteem. But when Centro launched its HiSET prep program, she finally felt she had the chance to advance her education and jumped at the opportunity to enroll.

Now, with her testing nearly complete, Flor has a newfound excitement about her future. Her feelings of being “less than” have started to fade and she is driven to finish and set an example for others. Her biggest goal is to continue moving forward in order to help others open their minds, and to show them that if she was able to regain her confidence and overcome so many difficult things, they can, too.
